In a survey across the country they found three out of four school districts having to alter transportation services and more than half listing their driver shortage as severe or desperate. The start of the school year has been a rough ride for many kids who haven’t been on a regular schedule for more than a year, and for districts that are struggling with thousands of COVID cases among students and staff.īut there’s another problem that’s grinding school operations across the state toward a stop – a bus driver shortage.Ī bus pulling away from the curb sounds like the end of summer to some 800,000 Ohio kids and their parents. ![]() This shortage is something the National School Transportation Association predicted in August. ![]() The updating issue for Microsoft has been a problem for years it's not something new with Windows 10. The bottom line, however, is that Windows updates are large, and even breaking the updates into smaller segments and spacing them out so they don’t take place all at once still requires the machine to be on a long time then, once the update is fully downloaded, the PC still has to incorporate the software in background mode to have minimal impact on the machine performance. When investigating the issue, Microsoft found "insufficient update connectivity,” or the amount of time and bandwidth needed to update hardware completely during the six hours of connected time. “If a device has insufficient update connectivity, then investigating other update issues is complicated because the low update connectivity can create new issues that go away once there’s enough connectivity,” Guyer wrote. One problem is end users power down their systems at the end of their workday, eliminating the possibility of updates overnight. “Impress upon the importance of keeping their devices connected so their devices can stay protected and they can stay productive,” Guyer said. That number drops to 25% of Windows 10 devices that are on a serviced build but have security updates more than 60 days out of date, according to Microsoft. The problem with long updates, Microsoft claimed, is most prevalent on devices running Windows 10 those systems require substantially larger updates than Windows 11. So these are both taken into account in the criteria.” Others need to restart from the beginning if the device shuts down. "Some parts of the update process can restart where they left off, like the downloads. "The six 'total connected hours' (not eight) I cited in this post are based on studies that include devices that are infrequently used, often only online for a few minutes across multiple hours, have intermittent connectivity, and are often running on battery power," Guyer wrote. Nearly a week after the blog was first posted, Guyer answered some pointed questions in a comment thread, explaining that the majority of updates - from start to finish - can take less than an hour. “This allows for a successful download and background installations that are able to restart or resume once a device is active and connected,” Guyer wrote. ![]() A well-defined description of the goal to be achieved. It’s an essential part of the strategic planning process and helps with improving teamwork planning Not only in project management, but action plans can be used by individuals to prepare a strategy to achieve their own personal goals as well. I love using coconut water as a base for smoothies, but I typically opt for other delicious but less-expensive brands (like Vita Coco) for mixing and stick to Harmless Harvest for drinking. And, of course, it’s the best coconut water that happens to be pink. Harmless Harvest is on the sweeter end of the coconut water spectrum, but it’s reliably crisp and chuggable. The bottles are typically smaller than other brands (and pricier!), but the sweetness is so concentrated that it feels like the perfect amount. This is a post-workout drink, Danny said. Typically when I reach for coconut water it's because I am craving a hydrating drink that packs a lot of flavor, which is why Harmless Harvest's coconut water is my favorite. ![]() I prefer coconut water to sports drinks since it's not as sweet, but just as satisfying and hydrating. I always drink coconut water right before I get on a flight (airplane air can be so dry, and traveling can give me a headache!), and after a workout, late night out or a long day out in the sun. The uptick in cost is well worth the quality, but when I'm on a tighter budget, Vita Coco is also a tried-and-true. ![]() The one upside (and downside) of Harmless Harvest is that it requires refrigeration even before opening and is priced at a slight premium. But sipping on Harmless Harvest feels like drinking the champagne of coconut water, and you can taste the difference in its freshness. A lot of the common brands on the shelf, like Vita Coco, which I also love, are not as sweet. Harmless Harvest's coconut water, which you can always spot because of its pink color (which happens naturally when the water's antioxidants interact with light), is the coconut water I go for whenever I want to treat myself. ![]() ![]() The first method can be used to cook small packages of meat, poultry, or seafood in a sink. Freezing ground beef in cold water can be accomplished either by using one of the two methods described below or by using both. If you’re using the quick thaw method, it’s a good idea to discard the water and replace it with fresh cold tap water every 30 minutes. The package of meat can be kept in a cold running stream or in a cold sink to keep it from drying out. ![]() If you need to get something done in a hurry, it is possible to use the quick thaw method. Ground beef is thinner and easier to thaw after being pounded. You can also use leftover ground beef in the pan, which is still slightly frozen in the middle. The meat may have begun to cook after defrosting as a result of cooking. Furthermore, using a rolling pin to flatten the meat can help to hold down air in the bag, potentially preventing freezer burn and dehydration. It is critical to choose a package that is tightly wrapped. The three most common methods for thawing frozen ground beef are safe and quick. Ground beef should be cooked to order, using safe methods. Ground beef does not enter the temperature danger zone (40 to 140 degrees Fahrenheit), where harmful bacteria can form, when it is transferred from the freezer to the refrigerator. It is the safest and best way to thaw ground beef in the refrigerator for 10–12 hours. How Do You Thaw Frozen Ground Beef Tubes? The water should be changed every few minutes, and it should warm up as soon as it starts to feel warm. In times of need, you can speed up thawing by submerging the vacuum sealed bag in a bowl of cold water. Use cold water to cool vacuum-packed meat. It is critical to seal and leak-proof the frozen beef in a sealed and leak-proof package, then submerge it in cold tap water – it may appear that warming or hot water will speed up the thawing process, but they will heat the outer layer of beef too quickly, risking food After that, select the defrost feature on the microwave, or manually set the defrost mode to 30 percent power. When the beef is ready to eat, microwave it in a microwave-safe container for about 30 seconds, or until the beef is cooked through and covered in plastic wrap. Once ground beef has been defrosted, it will be ready to eat within 30 minutes. Break the meat up into small pieces every five minutes while you check it. Fill a sink or large pot with hot water and defrost it. ![]() It is only appropriate to use this method on small amounts of ground beef. It takes less time to defrost the meat in hot water as compared to frozen meat. If you don’t mind the packaging, you can make microwave popcorn in the microwave. The temperature of the water can affect the defrosting process of ground beef, so it can be defrosted in the microwave, hot water, or a cold water sink. When beef is frozen in cold water, it must be kept in a securely sealed zip-top bag. If you eat beef in the refrigerator, it’s like eating a knife. defrosting ground beef in four different ways. If you have some time, you can defrost ground beef. But what if you don’t have that kind of time? Is it safe to defrost ground beef in its plastic wrapper in cold water? The best way to thaw ground beef is in the refrigerator, allowing about 24 hours for every five pounds. As anyone who has forgotten to take meat out of the freezer for dinner knows, you can’t just stick a frozen steak or ground beef in the microwave and hope for the best. ![]() Robey supplied the parts, but the modification was undertaken by Goodes of Royston. tandem rollers were modified to make a further variant, the tri-tandem, which was a tandem with a third roll, mounted directly behind the rear one. Those made by Robey & Co used their standard steam wagon engine and pistol boiler fitted in a girder frame with rolls and a chain drive to produce a quick-reversing roller suitable for modern road surfaces such as tarmacadam and bituminous asphalt. However, there was also a distinctive variant, the "tandem", which had two wide rolls, one front, one rear. The majority of rollers were of the same basic 3-roll configuration, gear-driven, with two large smooth wheels (rolls) at the back and a single wide roll at the front (in actuality, the wide roll usually consisted of two narrower rolls on the same axle, to make steering easier). Configurations 1925 Robey tandem roller #42693, now owned by the Robey Trust Machines that could do this were introduced in the first decade of the 20th century. The move to asphalt for road construction resulted in the demand for steamrollers that could rapidly reverse so they could roll the tar while still hot. Īveling & Porter refined their product continuously over the following decades, introducing fully steerable front rollers and compound steam engines at the 1881 Royal Agricultural Show. A New York City chief engineer said of one of these, that "in one day's rolling at a cost of 10 dollars, as much work was accomplished as in two days' rolling with a 7 ton roller drawn by eight horses at a cost of 20 dollars a day." The heavier rollers were found to be hard to handle and the weight of the machines was reduced to around 10 tons. Within a year, they were being exported around the world, including to France, India and the United States. ![]() It was tested on the Military Road in Chatham, Star Hill in Rochester and in Hyde Park, London and the machine proved a huge success. In 1867, the steam road roller was patented and the company began production of the first practical steam roller – the new machine's rollers were mounted at the front instead of the back and it weighed in excess of 30 tons. This experimental machine was described by local papers as 'the world's first steamroller' and it caused a public spectacle. In 1866 they produced a prototype roller with 3 foot-wide rollers fitted to the rear of a standard 12 nominal horsepower traction engine. The company Aveling and Porter was the first to successfully sell the product commercially and subsequently became the largest manufacturer in Britain. Having failed to impress the British municipal road authorities it was transferred to Kolkata where it continued to work. In Britain, a 30-ton steamroller was designed in 1863 by William Clark and partner W.F. Īn early steamroller was patented by Louis Lemoine in France in 1859 and demonstrated sometime before February 1861. Pictured is the model "Britannia".īefore about 1850, the word steamroller meant a fixed machine for rolling and curving steel plates for boilers and ships.įrom then on, it also meant a mobile device for flattening ground. History Aveling and Porter manufactured the first successful steamrollers. The word steamroller frequently refers to road rollers in general, regardless of the method of propulsion. The key difference between the two vehicles is that on a roller the main roll replaces the front wheels and axle that would be fitted to a traction engine, and the driving wheels are smooth-tired. The majority of steam rollers are outwardly similar to traction engines as many traction engine manufacturers later produced rollers based on their existing designs, and the patents owned by certain roller manufacturers tended to influence the general arrangements used by others. The leveling/flattening action is achieved through a combination of the size and weight of the vehicle and the rolls: the smooth wheels and the large cylinder or drum fitted in place of treaded road wheels. Obviously not too many foreigners in these parts. A wedding was going on nearby and all of a sudden we turned into rather awkward guests of honour. In the towns and cities of Vietnam, it’s not uncommon to see whole families crammed onto scooters, however out here family members were replaced by a wide variety of barnyard creatures.Įn route, we stopped and asked for directions at a local shop. By now the roads were quiet, especially on the dirt roads. With limestone karsts jutting up from the earth, rice paddies glistening in the sunshine and clear blue skies this was a wonderful ride, exactly as we imagined it should have been when we left Hanoi. It was on this journey that the scenery jumped into the spectacular. A street in Langson Day 2: Lang Son to Cao Bang The town has a couple of great viewpoints over the surrounding scenery. With colourful houses and surrounding hills, you could be forgiven for thinking you were in Central or South America. Finding a guesthouse in Lang Son was easy enough, although they were very surprised to see two pasty white guys climbing off of the motorbikes. As we pulled away from Vietnam’s crowded capital the roads seemed to empty as the hills rolled past us. The journey up was easy once we got out of Hanoi. We headed northeast out of Hanoi towards the pretty little town of Lang Son. If you’ve never ridden these, find a quiet street to practice on before heading out into the big wide world as we did. For this trip, we upgraded to the big-boy world of semi-automatics, which meant we now had to start changing gears (gulp). Dan had also ridden a scooter in the past, but calling us “experienced” would have been insulting and very much incorrect. I had ridden a scooter a couple of weeks earlier, down to the Mekong Delta from Ho Chi Minh City. Other motorcyclists on the other hand are generally much better although you still need to be on your guard. Indicators, road markings and the use of mirrors seem to be optional extras here, especially for trucks and buses. The best advice I can give is to give as much space as you can to others and beep that horn on every blind corner. Vietnamese roads require constant attention and occasional spider-man-like reflexes. That being said we did have more than a few incidents that raised the old heart rates, not all of which was to do with the roads. I would never do this sort of trip alone. Fortunately, they were able to give us a photocopy before we left. The fact that the bikes we hired back in 2008 were from a company recommended by our hostel made Dan feel more relaxed about handing over his passport. Looking back on it, it’s probably something I wouldn’t have recommended back in 2008 either, but such is life. Now in 2018, I would not recommend doing this since most bike rental agencies will take a copy of your passport and a deposit. Back in 2008, this was extremely common in Vietnam. Fortunately, Dan was good enough to volunteer. Alas, they need collateral in the form of one of our passports. We stayed at Hanoi Backpackers and they were able to recommend a reliable company to rent two Honda 125s. ![]() No smartphones, no google maps, just a regular road map written in Vietnamese, of course. We had a only Vietnamese road map to guide us. ![]() Finally, we would then take a few mountain roads west and then head south and visit the Ba Be Lakes National Park. Next, we would press on further north to Cao Bang, a small city situated 100 or so kilometres from the Chinese border (more on that later). Our first destination would be the mountain town of Lang Son. When planning our trip we picked a circular route that started and ended in Hanoi. Back in 2008, we didn’t see another foreign tourist until we returned to Hanoi 1 week later. Even today the northeast of the country is still relatively unexplored in a backpacking sense. We chose this part of the country as almost every tourist we’d met had headed northwest to Sapa. This was where the idea for our North Eastern Vietnam road trip came from. Tourism to Vietnam had only opened up a few years prior, so there were still plenty of undiscovered gems in this beautiful country.Ī week or so earlier a friend and I hired a scooter each and rode from Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City) down in the Mekong delta for a 3-day road trip. Back in 2008 I and my good friend Dan decided to rent a motorbike each and disappear for a week. Hiring motorbikes in Vietnam is something that is on many travellers’ bucket lists. Motorbiking through North Eastern Vietnam ![]() With the Taliban’s assumption of control, long-standing US and UN sanctions on the Taliban became applicable to Afghanistan as a whole, barring other private financial transactions and also creating potential penalties for those engaged in aid and development work. The US Treasury froze the Afghanistan Central Bank’s foreign currency reserves, which sit mostly in US banks, and suspended currency deliveries. ![]() As a result, external donor assistance, which had previously supported some 75 percent of the Afghan Government’s expenditures, has been cut off since late August. After the Taliban assumed control of Kabul on 15 August, major donors like the US and European States suspended their overall bilateral assistance, the World Bank halted disbursements, and the IMF blocked access to its credit and asset lines. However, while the additional pledges are substantial, it is important to recognize the (intentionally) narrow scope of these aid flows. Already in September, the US had announced an additional USD 64 million in humanitarian aid in Afghanistan and for Afghan refugees elsewhere. In last week’s summit, the EU announced USD 1.15 billion in humanitarian aid going forward, covering humanitarian and health support in-country as well as support to Afghans who fled to nearby countries. Such statistics, and the likely scale of human suffering coming this winter, have spurred major international donors to release humanitarian aid in the last few weeks, notwithstanding their objections to the Taliban’s takeover and steps since assuming power. Current estimates suggest that some 18 million, almost half the population, are in need of critical, life-saving care in the coming period. An estimated 36 per cent of Afghans face food insecurity, a number that will likely increase as the Afghan winter approaches and if the alarming warnings of the worst drought in 35 years bear out. The economic situation, together with lingering effects from the fighting and mass displacement over the summer and a COVID-19 situation that continues out of control, have seriously strained even basic humanitarian and livelihood systems. Government salaries have not been paid in months and the cost of basic goods is rising. With banks closed, international assets frozen, and sanctions and border blockages halting most economic assistance and official trade, the economic system is in freefall. The situation in Afghanistan right now is a looming “ humanitarian catastrophe” in the words of UN Secretary-General António Guterres. While the impetus is understandable, this approach is likely to backfire, and betrays a lack of strategic thinking about the sort of political dialogue and engagement that may be necessary to protect Afghans, and international interests in the near term. In short, it is an effort to try to help the Afghan people without helping the Taliban. Major donors seem to be coalescing around a similar position: providing immediate humanitarian assistance and emergency relief to get Afghans through the immediate crisis, but stopping short of anything that might be seen as recognition or support for the Taliban government. ![]() Last week, members of the G20 met to discuss the increasingly dire situation in Afghanistan. |
